Thank you for sharing!!! It is so validating to hear your story. I found myself to a "little woo" by way of similar circumstances and once you see the life changing/saving benefits of being your own advocate, I don't think you can ever go back. It is now a way of thinking/being in the world and although it can be lonely at times, I have found it incredibly empowering. I agree that the hardest part is knowing where to draw the line with finding accurate information but there are fundamental principles of functional health that I continue to return to. I recently discovered Peter Attia's work and find him to be an excellent balance of what he calls "medicine 3.0".
Hi Jo! Hope the tumor is benign and treatable! Yikes! I'm glad to read of your advocacy efforts, and they are so so important. For a balanced perspective, I would also recommend reading "Overdiagnosed: Making People Sick in the Pursuit of Health" By Dr. Gil Welch. It's a difficult balance to strike, but important to keep both perspectives in mind.
Thank you for this, I'll definitely check this book out! The problem I see is less around the volume of diagnostics and more around the more personalized conversations that need to be had between doctors and patients.
I'm grateful your husband posted this on LinkedIn and that the algorithm served it to me. I'm excited to be a new follower.
This piece resonated with me. I've become disenchanted by the conventional medical system after fighting my care team to test me for PCOS. After 4 years of feeling "off" I finally found my voice and got the diagnosis that I knew in my gut would come. I applaud your self-advocacy and that you're using your platform to encourage people to be a squeaky wheel even in the face of discomfort.

Would be curious what you think of “Good Energy” by Casey Means! Stanford trained surgeon and advisor to RFK Jr.
